Directed by Joel Schlader, Woodminster’s production is pleasingly polished, despite some occasional uneven miking among the large cast. Maggie Lamb’s painted scenery evokes a variety of settings with great versatility, and Alison Morris’ bright costumes for the legions of fairy-tale characters are delightful. It’s easy for the low-key title character to get overshadowed by the over-the-top personalities around him, but Rubio nicely hints at the shy yearning beneath Shrek’s gruff exterior. Rod Voltaire Edora is a chatty charmer as the Donkey, who appoints himself the ogre’s new best friend, and Claire Buchignani is pricelessly, manically peppy as Princess Fiona, a hopeless romantic who learned everything she thinks she knows from fairy tales. Claire Lentz and Katie Elman also have endearing turns as younger versions of Fiona as she grows up waiting for a dashing knight to come rescue her any day now.

Schneider now visits Avenidas almost daily for the creative writing classes and to meet friends for a donation-based lunch provided by La Comida de California. “I don’t have to shop, do dishes or cook,” Schneider said. Comida is a separate nonprofit that leases the space from Avenidas. On Wednesday, the popular dining spot had 150 visitors eating, chatting and listening to a live jazz piano player. Comida’s lunch program grew by 20 percent in the last year, said board president Bill Blodgett.

The intention may have been payback but, according to Hemsworth, the result was less so. “It just got really funny and ridiculous you know. It’s like in high school when you’re not meant to laugh,” he said. And fun and laughs is what Portman wants audiences to have. Despite appearing in many more serious and highbrow roles, the Oscar winner will not have the Hollywood blockbuster devalued. She says “escapism” is the main reason people go to the movies and there is no room for snobbery.
