Now 21, she is a junior camp program staff member and lives on campus with her mother, who is also a staff member. Via Services started in 1945 when two women saw a 13-year-old boy with cerebral palsy at his home day after day. With the mother’s permission, the women carried his wheelchair down two flights of stairs to show him different scenery and provide emotional stimulation via short trips. As word spread, the women became the founders of the Crippled Children’s Society of Santa Clara County, Inc. Now known as Via Services, the mission is to “help children and adults with special needs and disabilities achieve greater self-sufficiency and lead richer lives.”.
