Oakland Ballet Company: Drawing on the original E.T.A. Hoffmann short story that launched the Nutcracker juggernaut on its eventual conquest of American stages, Oakland Ballet’s Graham Lustig set his “Nutcracker” in turn-of-the-century Vienna. While the production premiered with New Jersey’s American Repertory Ballet in 2000, it feels tailor-made for the Paramount Theatre’s glittery Art Deco finery. With the Michael Morgan-directed Oakland Symphony and the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir joining the orchestra for the Snow Scene, the graceful production features more than 40 young Bay Area dancers (aged 7 to 17) performing alongside the company’s professionals as snowballs, mice, soldiers and candies. Details: 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Dec. 22 and 1 p.m. Dec. 23; Paramount Theatre, Oakland; $24-$97; 510-893-3132, oaklandballet.org.
That camaraderie extends to the students as well, On Oct, 26, the 12 members of the Arroyo squad and the 20 San Lorenzo cheerleaders will perform a dance routine during the schools’ annual big game, dubbed the Helmet Game, “The ballet pump ,satin slipper girls get along,” DeBernardi said, “Leave the rivalry to the boys on the football field.”, The Helmet Game will be played on Arroyo’s new football field, All the fields at both schools, including softball, baseball and soccer, are being renovated, said Lowell Shira, assistant superintendent, Not all the work is done, but the football fields were ready in time for this season..
7 “Mortified”: The nationwide phenomenon returns to the Bay Area. For the uninitiated, “Mortified” is a touring show in which brave souls read/perform accounts of a momentous incident in their life — first kiss, prom, driver’s test, you get the idea — to the heartily voiced approval or disapproval of the (possibly inebriated) audience. The event makes two Bay Area stops this week. Details: 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at DNA Lounge, San Francisco; 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at New Parish, Oakland; $14-$20; http://getmortified.com.
