And, basically, everything about the night was as expected. Petty stuck to a very safe and familiar set list, favoring the usual assortment of well-known pop-rock ditties despite telling Rolling Stone that he was looking at breaking out some long-neglected songs for this tour. As this concert underscored, Petty lives at the intersection of dependable and predictable. The good news about that is that you always know what you’re getting with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The bad news is that you always know what you’re getting.

The evening’s biggest discovery was Mexican tenor Javier Camarena. Making his company debut, he sang the role of Count Almaviva, who disguises himself as the suitor Lindoro in order to win the hand of Rosina. Camarena’s firm, flexible vocalism — and his ardent tone in the role’s serenades — earned him the biggest ovations of the night, particularly in the Count’s rarely-performed Act II aria, “Cessa di piu resistere.”. Still, it was mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard who made the most indelible impression. With her rich, buttery sound, the American mezzo-soprano has clearly made the role of Rosina her own. The voice is strong, fresh and lovely throughout her range, and she tosses off the character’s trills and roulades with ease. She’s also a splendid comic actress; as long as she’s onstage, it’s hard to look elsewhere.
